Although there are over 130 pharmaceutical companies in Nigeria, only 9 are listed on the stock exchange: Neimeth, May & Baker Nigeria PLC, MZOR, Fidson, DGF, GSK, NGC, NEROS Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and Novartis. Common drugs produced include: anti-malaria, vaccines and ARV, antibiotics, anti-helminthics, oncology drugs, and diabetic drugs [1].

There are currently no WHO PQ certified drugs in Nigeria, though several stakeholders mentioned plans to get certified. For example, Neimeth – has engaged Australian consultant for facility upgrade to meet WHO cGMP standard and is preparing to present dossiers for WHO PQ.

Besides the domestic major players mentioned above, there are also some international players, such as GSK, Novartis, Pfizer.  

India is currently Nigeria’s second largest trading partner and Nigeria is the largest trading partner of India in Africa. Nigeria is also the largest market in Africa for Indian exports. A large number of Indian companies have footprints in Nigeria, which have made substantial investments in the country. Bilateral annual trade turnover was over US $17.3 billion in 2011-12, registering growth of over 34%. A number of Indian healthcare players are making beeline to Nigeria. Primus Hospital has a hospital on a PPP model in conjunction with the Nigerian Government at Abuja[2].
